I recently started dating again, and connected with a man online who asked me out to dinner. I was getting ready for our date when I felt hot. I panicked—I had some HVAC issues in the last few months, but I had yet to find a heating and cooling technician that I trusted to tinker with my HVAC equipment. Discovering warm air rushing out of my vents, I turned the cooling system off and got ready as fast as I could. I suffered through the blow dryer, but I couldn’t endure the curling iron. When my date knocked on the door, I greeted him knowing that I wasn’t looking my best. He asked if I was okay. When I told him that my air conditioning system was on the fritz, he smiled and said, “Well, I’m off the clock, but I can take a look.” He turned out to be an HVAC technician! He examined my cooling system top to bottom, even climbing up into the attic with a flashlight to assess my ductwork. When he came back down the ladder, his shirt covered in dust, he said, “I can fix this. Just let me get some tools from my truck.” We talked while he worked on the ducts and the air handler, and he told me that he had become an HVAC technician for this very reason: he loved helping people. After a few tweaks to the air handler and a visit to the outside unit in the backyard, cool air came rushing out of the vents again. I was so thrilled that I hugged him! Both sweaty by this point, we ordered a pizza and decided to stay in and watch a movie on the couch. I think a second date is in order!
