I had to hire someone to work at the HVAC store and I went through a whole list of applications.
All of the applications were from young technicians and I really needed someone with experience in residential and commercial heating and cooling.
After looking at several different applications and resumes, I called a couple of people that looked good on paper. One of those technicians was only out of school for a year and still went behind the ears. When I brought the kitten for an interview, I knew that his last name sounded familiar. During the interview process, he informed me that his dad and I went to school together. His dad was listed as one of his references, so I called the guy to talk with him for a few minutes. We caught up and I told my old school friend that I would be happy to hire his son. Even though I was looking for someone with experience, I couldn’t say no to a friend of a friend. The new guy has been working with me for the past couple of weeks and so far, so good. I have the kid working with another technician for a couple of months and then he will be out on his own. Even though he only has a year of experience, it’s clear that he was really paying attention when he was going to certification classes. The kid knows all of the processes. As soon as he has confidence, he’s going to be a great residential and commercial service technician.
