I am not sure if you are aware of the situation that several farmers are facing this year.
The lack of migrant workers, thanks to the modern events, is affecting their ability to harvest crops.
Normally there are at least a hundred workers in our neighborhood that travel along the farming route toiling as they go. This year, my family that owns a big farm, has had to rely on locals to help out when they can; Young people who may be looking for Summer jobs don’t last long due to the long hours & strenuous labor either, however they would rather labor at the local fast food place than option corn for eight hours in the warm sun. I can’t say as I blame them much because that is exactly what I have been doing every afternoon for the past week; My dad insists that all the picking is done by hand so at the end of the afternoon I am beat. All I want is a fantastic bath & my air conditioner. I don’t even watch TV. I come home, relax in the tub for an hour, eat dinner, & then crank the AC. I kneel on my bed which is right under one of the air vents & I am asleep in no time. I know that the migrant workers cherish the jobs they have although I can’t imagine doing this type of labor everyday for months on end. Many of them don’t even have the luxury of sleeping in weather conditions controlled spaces at the farms where they work. At least dad has a bunkhome for them where they can get some relief.
