Wishing for relief after a long day’s work

I am not sure if you are aware of the situation that many farmers are facing this year.

The lack of migrant workers, thanks to the current events, is affecting their ability to harvest crops.

Normally there are at least a hundred workers in our town that travel along the farming route working as they go. This year, my family that owns a large farm, has had to rely on locals to help out when they can. Young people who may be looking for summer jobs don’t last long due to the long hours and hard work either. They would rather work at the local fast food place than pick corn for eight hours in the hot sun. I can’t say as I blame them much because that is exactly what I have been doing every day for the past week. My dad insists that all the picking is done by hand so at the end of the day I am beat. All I want is a relaxing bath and my air conditioner. I don’t even watch TV. I come home, relax in the tub for an hour, eat dinner, and then crank the AC. I lay on my bed which is right under one of the air vents and I am asleep in no time. I know that the migrant workers appreciate the jobs they have but I can’t imagine doing this type of work everyday for months on end. Many of them don’t even have the luxury of sleeping in climate controlled spaces at the farms where they work. At least dad has a bunkhouse for them where they can get some relief.
