I am not sure if you are aware of the situation that several farmers are facing this year.
- The lack of migrant workers, thanks to the current events, is affecting their ability to harvest crops.
Normally there are at least a hundred workers in our town that travel along the farming route working as they go. This year, my family that owns a huge farm, has had to rely on locals to help out when they can, but young people who may be looking for summer time jobs don’t last long due to the long hours & strenuous labor either. They would rather labor at the local fast food locale than pick corn for eight hours in the sizzling sun. I can’t say as I blame them much because that is exactly what I have been doing every morning for the past week! My Mom insists that all the picking is done by hand so at the end of the morning I am beat. All I want is a great bath & my air conditioner. I don’t even watch TV. I come home, relax in the tub for an hour, eat lunch, & then crank the AC. I kneel on my bed which is right under one of the air vents & I am asleep in no time. I know that the migrant workers love the jobs they have however I can’t imagine doing this type of labor everyday for months on end. Many of them don’t even have the luxury of sleeping in weather conditions controlled spaces at the farms where they work. At least Mom has a bunkproperty for them where they can get some relief.
